A glossary for search and local marketing

AI citation

An AI citation is a source link included in an answer from an AI assistant. It lets readers check where a statement came from, but does not automatically mean the assistant recommends your business.

In plain terms

It gives a reader a route to inspect the material behind a statement, but the link needs to be read. A citation may support only part of an answer, and a familiar domain in a list does not necessarily mean the business is being recommended. A mention names your business. A citation points to a source, which may be your website or another publisher; a business can be named without receiving a link to its own pages.

How to check it

Save the question, answer, date and linked passage. Distinguish a business mention from a citation to its own domain. Check whether the account or page exists and whether the answer represents it accurately. Repeated checks need comparable questions and context before you interpret differences as a visibility trend.
