A glossary for search and local marketing

AEO (answer engine optimization)

AEO means writing pages so that the answer to a customer’s question is easy to find and quote. Google’s AI answers and assistants like ChatGPT pull short, direct answers from pages like these.

In plain terms

SEO helps a page rank in a list of links. AEO helps a page give the answer itself. A page written for AEO puts the question near the top and answers it in the first sentence or two, then backs the answer up with real detail from the business.

GEO (generative engine optimization) is the closely related idea of being mentioned and cited by AI assistants. In practice the work overlaps, which is why we treat AEO and GEO as one area.

How to do it

Pick one question a customer really asks. Answer it plainly in the opening lines. Add the specifics only your business knows: how your process works, what it includes, who it suits. Cut paragraphs that restate the question without adding anything.

Where Antidote helps

Antidote drafts answer-first pages and posts from your brand context and runs sampled checks of whether AI assistants mention you. A person still checks the facts before anything is published. No one can guarantee an AI answer will quote you.

Common questions

Is AEO different from SEO?

They overlap. SEO is about ranking in search results; AEO is about being the answer. A clear, well-structured page usually helps both.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

AEO focuses on answer-first pages. GEO focuses on being mentioned and cited by AI assistants. Most of the work is the same.

How do I know if AEO is working?

Ask AI assistants the questions your customers ask and note whether your business or pages appear. Antidote samples these checks for you; results vary between assistants and over time.
